Salt Crystals

Welcome to Chemistry Primer

Chemistry Resources

  • Scissors
  • Black Construction Paper
  • Pie Pan
  • 1 tbsp Epsom Salt
  • 1/4 cup Warm Water

Cut dark construction paper so that it fits in the bottom of the pan. Add Epsom Salt to water until dissolved. Do not drink the solution. Lay the construction paper in the pie pan and pour the salt solution over the paper. Place the pan in a warm, dry place (a sunny windowsill is perfect). As the water evaporates, you'll see spiky crystals growing. Try it again after adding a few drops of food coloring to the salt water solution. What happens?
